OLAM COCOA
The delegation was given an exclusive tour of the Olam Cocoa Processing cocoa factory in Abidjan on Thursday, November 16, 2023. This state-of-the-art facility is a major player in the processing of cocoa beans and plays an important role in the region’s cocoa industry. The tour enabled the delegation to follow the entire production process from the arrival of the raw cocoa beans to the manufacture of high-quality cocoa products. This experience not only provided a better understanding of the cocoa industry in Côte d’Ivoire, but also emphasized the importance of Olam Cocoa Processing as a driving force for growth and development in the region.
ONAD
On Thursday, November 16, the delegation visited the ONAD waterworks in Cocody Djibi (Abidjan). With an impressive production capacity of 14,000 m³ per day, this waterworks plays a crucial role in supplying the population with clean drinking water. The tour provided valuable insights into the functioning and operation of the waterworks and ONAD’s efforts to ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply in the region. This experience underlines the importance of water supply for the daily lives of people in Abidjan and highlights the need for further investment in water infrastructure to meet the growing demand for clean drinking water.
ANYAMA
On Wednesday, November 16, the delegation visited the construction site of the Anyama wastewater treatment plant in the northern part of Abidjan. This plant is a key element of the city’s wastewater infrastructure and plays a crucial role in the treatment and purification of wastewater. The visit enabled the delegation to gain an insight into the progress and challenges in the development of wastewater infrastructure in Abidjan. This experience strengthened the understanding of the importance of wastewater management for the health and environment of the community and underlined the need for further investment and action to improve wastewater management in the region.

On Wednesday, November 15, the delegation had the privilege of meeting Mr. Amine Berrada, Managing Director of CA2I. In an informative session, he shared his extensive experience in the Ivorian water and wastewater management market. His insights were invaluable and provided valuable insights into the specific challenges, opportunities and best practices in this important sector. This meeting underlines the delegation’s commitment to learning from local experts and strengthening partnerships to promote sustainable development in the region.
WASTEWATER TREATMENT
On Tuesday, November 14, an important symposium was held as part of the Côte d’Ivoire exhibition. Under the topic “L’eau et le traitement des eaux usées en Côte d’Ivoire – Les opportunités d’affaires et modèles de financement pour le secteur”, representatives from various sectors discussed the challenges and opportunities in the field of water and wastewater treatment in Côte d’Ivoire. The symposium provided a platform for the exchange of ideas and the search for funding opportunities for innovative projects to improve the country’s water infrastructure.
AFWASA AND SODECI
A significant meeting took place on November 13, when the delegation met with the African Association for Water and Sanitation (AfWASA) and SODECI after a constructive working meeting. The aim was to discuss pressing issues in the area of water supply and sanitation. After this productive exchange, a group photo was taken documenting the cooperation and joint commitment to better water supply and sanitation facilities.
SODECI
The Koumassi wastewater treatment plant in the southern part of the Abidjan district was built in 1994. The plant currently has a capacity of 78,000 m3 per day, three times as much as before its last renovation in 2020. This is the only wastewater treatment plant in which all pre-treatment phases (removal of sand, removal of grease and waste separation) are present.
KOSSIHOUEN
The Kossihouen landfill (Centre de Valorisation et d’Enfouissement Technique – CVET) covers an area of 100 hectares and has a capacity of 4 million tons. Every year, around 90 percent of the waste generated in the Abidjan district is processed in the landfill, i.e. sorted according to recyclable materials and residual waste is disposed of. In addition to a recycling center, the landfill also has a biogas plant. However, the treatment of leachate remains a major challenge for the facility.
WORKSHOP
The workshop on “Traitement durable des eaux usées pour une protection de l’environnement” on May 24, 2023 in Abidjan was attended by various stakeholders in the water and wastewater sector, such as the company SODECI, local authorities, civil society actors and service supervisors from the Ministry of Hydraulics, Sanitation and Hygiene ONAD, ONEP and the Department of Urban Sanitation and Drainage (DAUD). The participants were presented with detailed information about FlexBio’s solutions and the advantages and benefits of this innovative technology for the environment and human health.
PROF. YAPO
The situation of wastewater management in the country was discussed with Prof. Yapo Ossey, Deputy Director of the Central Laboratory for the Environment of the Ivorian Center for the Fight against Pollution (CIAPOL). Prof. Yapo is a researcher at the University of Nangui Abrogoua and an expert in environmental chemistry and analysis as well as environmental biotechnology.

NANGUI-ABROGOUA
At the University of Nangui Abrogoua, there was a working meeting with Prof. Dr. Paul Kouakou Ahoutou, who heads the dual study program for water management and energy technology (Industry Integrated Dual Engineering Studies in a North-South Collaboration, IIDES-NSC). One focus of the course is water and energy supply in rural areas. The starting point for this initiative is that the Ivorian Ministry of Hydraulics, Sanitation and Hygiene wants to solve the problem of wastewater management and water access in the country with local approaches.
ENVIRONMENT
A meeting with the Managing Director of the Environment Agency in Côte d’Ivoire, Mr. Brahima Dagnogo, took place on March 20. in Cocody Riviera 3. Also present were the FEREADD board members Mr. Jules Loukou and Prof. Dr. N’Dri as well as Ms. Reuß, Mr. Durm and Mr. Loli from EurA. Mr. Dagnogo gave deep insights into the wastewater sector and described the current needs in this industry.
